Most of the damage happens in the first twenty minutes. Ring first, then do these while we’re on the way.
Stopcock clockwise until it stops. Kitchen sink cupboard is the usual spot; older terraces round here sometimes have it in the cellar head or outside in the path. If it’s seized, leave it and tell us.
If it’s a heating pipe or a rad, switching the boiler off stops it pushing hot water into the leak. Buys you more time than people expect.
Water near sockets, downlights or the fuse board is the real danger. Kill that circuit if you can reach the board safely, and mention it when you ring.
